Retaliation is a serious offense because it violates the right of an employee to rightfully complain or take action like whistleblowing or filing claims like workmen's compensation that is the worker's right. Companies have to be careful to walk a fine line and be aware of the treatment the worker might have received while there. If it is handled wrong, that can open the floodgates to civil lawsuits because more than one worker can file a claim no matter how dubious.
